社會發展、環境變化、關係網絡改變及高齡者的殊異性等因素使得以高齡者為對象的社會服務或產業發展等皆須與時俱進，沒有任何理論或研究成果可以恆久或普同性的適用於現代高齡者，因此，對於問題的產生不能僅限於表象的了解，而是需應用科學性的研究探究真正或可能的成因，進而尋找可能解決的方式或作為更深入研究的基礎。本課程即在使學生學習社會科學的研究方法，培養學生對社會現象的研究能力，以促進未來的專業或生涯發展。
