本課程為化工材料的基本專業課程，有機化學主要是對含有碳、氫、氧、氮等之化合物且與生命有機體有關的化學物質做一分類、物理性質與化學性質做一系統化的介紹。包括：烷類、烯類、醇類、酮類、醛類、胺類、芳香族等各類的有機化合物之化學反應。

本課程與化工實務及有機材料的關連性相當密切，且為普通化學的進一步延伸課程。因此，本課程的目標著重在以下幾點：
1.使修習本課程的同學了解並能辨別什麼叫＂有機物＂?什麼叫＂無機物＂?
2.能了解日常生活中常用到的有機物化學品有那些？
3.能熟悉有機化合物的種類及其官能基特性。
4.能熟悉有機化合物之間的化學反應關連性與反應機構。
