本課程在介紹光學與光電領域的基本原理和相關應用。從幾何光學、波動光學、光子等探究光的特性和相關原理，然後再深入探討光與物質的交互作用，接著探討運用這些原理所製作的各類光學元件、光電元件以及光電系統等等，包括有透鏡、光柵、照明光源、發光二極體、雷射、顯示器、數位相機、太陽能電池、光通訊系統等等。藉由本課程可以得到光學與光電領域的全貌，也可以奠立良好的光學與光電基礎，以便把光電元件應用在現代科技上。

介紹光電元件的轉換電路，包含類比光電轉換電路，以及基本數位電路的基礎知識，使修課同學在進行「實務專題」課程中，可以應用本課程所學習到的技術與知識。
